Ajing - Horse Mackerel

Ajing is a specialised technique of fishing originated in Japan to target horse mackerel “Ajis” and other light game species. Ajing anglers in Australia has found a niche for the ultralight rods, reels, lines and lures associated with Japanese Ajing to target highly pressurised species from bream to mulloway!

Fortunately for us, there is a sizeable Aji population in Australia, with Yellowtail Scads (Yakkas) occurring in all our inshore waters, and an active Greenback Horse Mackerel (Jack Mackerel) fishery in Western and Southern Australia.

To successfully start your AjiGame, you must use the right tackle, to match the target species.

A general rule of thumb is to go light to get the bite.

Lures for the AjiGame include soft plastics, microjigs, hardbodies and vibes. These range from 0.1g all the way to 5g, depending on the situation.

Line associated with Ajing are very thin diameter, Braid, PE or Ester line, typically ranging from PE0.15 (4lb) to PE0.4 (8lb) with leaders to match your desired target.

Rods used for Ajing have an extra-fast action, very high graphite content to transfer sensitivity and are lightweight, usually weighing between 45-80g. Despite their ultralight status, you should not underestimate their power and ability to land the odd trophy fish in favourable conditions.
